Mwangaza
The Mwangaza Self Help Group had finished their first education phase just before the start of Corona. Thirty-three members started their lessons in November 2019 and 30 got their certificate on February 18, 2020.
Hardly one month later life came to a standstill because of the Corona pandemic, and this was a big setback for the group. It was a hard time for the families. Kids were sent home; businesses were closed, and people lost their jobs. So, no income and thus no food. Fortunately, with the help of some Dutch donors, Kenya Care was able to at least support the women with some food packages. This has helped them a lot. It took a while for the group before they really could restart their businesses, and this is also a reason that some women left the group – some of them went back into prostitution….In 2021 the group had some internal problems with unity and trust. The problems were caused by the different backgrounds of the women. Some of the women come from very rural areas and another group come from Mtwapa – a town – and these women have been in prostitution before they joined the Kenya Care program.
With a lot of counselling – both in the group as well as individually – the situation in the group has stabilized and we see more mutual respect between the women nowadays. Especially the women who have been in prostitution before, are very good business ladies – they have learnt the hard way.
The group has 2 more years in the program.
