Wema
Maweni – village 3 km north of Mtwapa
Started with 25 members and 20 members graduated.
This group can be characterized as a very close group – very much united.
The group was very active in groups businesses. They still have some handcarts which they rent out as well as party rentals. This has become a good business and they are well-known in their community. Beside the group business most of the women had their own small business.
This group had several women with a very good business mentality.
An example: Kadzo – around 50 – never went to school, illiterate. She started a vegetable business (wholesale) with a first loan of just 35 euros. Then over time she got bigger loans from Kenya Care and built up her business with hard work and after 5 years she had managed to build 8 rental houses and owned a motorbike business, giving her around 30.000 Ksh a month – which is lower middle-income in Kenya. When the group graduated, they also had a group savings account with in total Ksh 115.000. And some women really developed leadership skills. Mwanahamisi Shabani later formed another new group – Great Hope.
